New-year greetings from the president of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials in 2015

Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd.
President & CEO: Masayoshi Tanaka

I would like to wish everyone a happy new year and will be well throughout this year.

Year 2015 is a year of sheep. As we read a newspaper, it said that sheep year is comparatively a calm and stable year.
The Nikkei Stock Average up and 17,000 yen - 21,000 yen, Japanese economy growth of 1.5%, also American economy is 3.0% of growth and we expect Chinese economy growth of 7%. We see the US$/Yen exchange rate is somewhere around 120 yen, and everyone wish no further weakness of Japanese yen. I think we all expect a stable and calm year.
As for Tokyo Boeki Steel & Material Ltd. 2015 is a milestone as it is the last year of The Third Mid-term Management Plan, and from April, we start the 4th Mid-term Management Plan. We have many challenges this year and we endeavor to create a new global business.
According to the New-year greetings from Mr. Machida, Chairman & CEO, Tokyo Boeki Holdings Ltd., Tokyo Boeki Group, we aim to achieve the Tokyo Boeki’s “30 Years Vision” which was enacted in 2007. At this moment, we still make our business foundation, but if all of us would continue to make our effort in next 20 years we achieve our goals. We will create our original products for self-sustaining. We cover production to sales and manage entire business by ourselves. Our predecessor with Tokyo Boeki’s tradition in mind, they made new business strategy by themselves, found the technologies, raised funds and created new business models. It is important for us to create businesses which remain to posterity. I hope everyone will participate and contribute to achieve the “30 Years Vision”.
I am also wishing you have healthy and prospective year 2015.

Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd.
President & CEO: Masayoshi Tanaka

New-year greetings from the president of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials in 2014

I would like to wish everyone a happy new year.

As I said a year ago, “the five-year cycle theory suggests that things will turn better from 2014”, the Nikkei Stock Average exceeded 16,000 yen and the Japanese economy is showing signs of recovery. When you look at the situation of the world, the US economy continues its moderate recovery led by firm demand private sector, and the European economy is showing good sign after its long economic downturn. On the other hand, the growth of economies of developing countries such as India, Vietnam and Indonesia where our overseas offices are located, are continuing growth even though facing difficult situations caused by their trade deficit, weak currency and inflation.Japanese companies find needs in various fields and penetrate the Southeast Asian market under these circumstances. We need to take advantage of our overseas bases, cultivate customer needs and develop new businesses. What matters the most having “the world view” and “the macro perspective”. If you lack of these you become short-sighted, and then you might lose the sight of future.I think how you move in your long life depends on your world view. At the New Year starts, we need to broaden our views by reading a variety of articles written by knowledgeable people.

According to the New-year greetings from Mr. Machida, Chairman & CEO, Tokyo Boeki Holdings Ltd., Tokyo Boeki Group achieves steady growth. We have to end this year with a good result which is the second year of The Third Mid-term Management Plan, and we will accomplish the third year plan and conclude successfully the mid-term plan.

This year, we will do well-balanced management. The key word is “Business structural reforms” to achieve a plan.As one of the structural reforms, we will get started changing the in-house structure. This structure change will give junior staffs and female employees to more business opportunities. Metabolism is one of the most important things in business. If you take a courageous action, something will happen. A company has to create human resources its needs. Our work is not being conservative but being creative. I expect your experiences and efforts will be turned into inspiration and courage. Each unit will cooperate each other, establish and promote a firm action plans. I hope this year will be surely successful with our abilities and efforts.

I think this year will be very exciting. 2014 is the Year of the Horse in the traditional 12-year cycle of animals in the Japanese zodiac. This suggests that it is important that taking risks and step forward like a horse running speedy.I hope all of you will make this year prosperous. Last of all, I would like to finish my New Year speech by wishing all of you and your family a new year filled with happiness.

New-year greetings from the President of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials in 2013

Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd
President & CEO: Masayoshi Tanaka

I would like to wish everybody a happy new year.

2013 is the Year of the Snake in the traditional 12-year cycle of animals in the Japanese zodiac. This suggests that we are going to have a year of renewed growth just like snakes’ molting. The foreign currency and the stock exchange markets have been shifting favorably since the birth of the LDP-led government. The Abe Administration is trying to change the country by adopting the reflation policy. They are aiming at changing Japan, which has not been able to overcome the deflation after the Lehman shock. I believe that this is the first step toward stronger Japan.

In addition, when I spent the beginning of this year in Tokyo, I felt again that Japan is a great country, the safest and the most comfortable place to live in the world. We must keep such a wonderful country, strong Japan to the next generation. We, ourselves, should contribute to Japan. Each employee must break his or her shell, molt and contribute to building a stronger company by reform. I believe this is the way to make everyone’s life richer and happier

Looking back last year, the world economy was in a difficult situation because of the recurrence of the European debt crisis and the slowdown in emerging economies including China. The Japanese economy had been expected to recover due to reconstruction demand, however it experienced further slowdown due to such issues as the appreciation of the yen and the conflict over the Senkaku Islands.

Although the world economy was in prosperous conditions for the five years between 2003 and 2007 thanks to the rapid growth of the Chinese economy, it experienced severe recession between 2008 and 2012 following the Lehman shock. However, at the end of last year, the President Obama was reelected in the United States, and some of the principal nations saw the political change of power including China, South Korea and Japan, and the Abe Administration started. Following the expectations for the economic policies of the new administration, the average stock price in Japan has exceeded 10,000 yen, which is the highest level since the day before the Great East Japan Earthquake. The Bank of Japan will change its policy in the near future. It is also expected that China will spend around one trillion Yuan in order to boost its economy, and we are now seeing sign for brighter economic conditions around us. And the five-year cycle theory suggests that things will turn better after the Chinese New Year 2013.

In the fiscal year 2013, recognizing that we are in the second year of the Mid-term management plan, we will make efforts to improve the earning rate by innovating the existing commercial rights, cultivating new markets, carrying out structural reforms and modifying our business model from agency-oriented to operation-oriented one. We will establish a hub in Indonesia and form a system that will control Asia and Oceania markets in order to differentiate Tokyo Boeki Steel and Materials Ltd, and to concentrate on the expansion of new Asian emerging markets, especially Indonesia, India and Myanmar. I would like to ask you to strengthen the cooperation among departments and overseas bases, to try to differentiate our company and to do your best for developing new markets.

Last of all, I would like to finish my New Year speech by wishing all of you and your family a new year filled with happiness.

On 14 January 2012, the annual New Year meeting of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd. was held at the Tokyo Headquarters. 43 people from TBSM headquarters, domestic branch offices, Tokyo Boeki Australia, Tokyo Boeki (China), Tokyo Boeki (Beijing), the representative offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and Jakarta (Indonesia) participated in the meeting. A review on the 2nd 3-year business plan along with the strategy and detailed policies within the 3rd 3-year business plan (starting from April this year) were presented by each division.

Each of the divisions and overseas offices were able to deepen their understanding of each other through the meeting. Despite the current economic situation, resulting primarily from the European debt crisis, this level of understanding will ensure that Tokyo Boeki Steels & Materials Ltd. and related companies will be able to proceed with its primary policy of developing new business opportunities in Asia, Oceania and other regions.

New-year greeting from the President of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd. in 2012

Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd.
President & CEO: Masayoshi Tanaka

I would like to wish everybody a happy new year.

In early spring last year, Japan suffered unprecedented destruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The huge tsunami caused by the earthquake brought catastrophic damage to the Pacific coastline in the Tohoku & Kanto regions. This was an iconic event of Japan in 2011. While recovering from the impact of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, Japan also received direct and indirect influences of the economic downturn in the world’s major countries in 2011, with the European debt crisis and a record strong Japanese Yen.

In the Chinese/Asian market, where Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd. is expanding its business, high growth is expected in spite of a slight slowdown in China and the impact of damage on manufacturers caused by massive floods in Thailand. In particular China, our major business partner, has already started easing its monetary policy and bank lending. It is expected that the rate of growth will not fall below 7-8%. In addition, in Indonesia, high growth is expected thanks to counter-inflationary measures, and the ratings of the international rating agencies on Indonesia has been improving. What role each of us is able to play and the manner in which we can overcome challenges in these growing markets will be a major focus in 2012.

The 6th term, ending this March, is the last financial year of Tokyo Boeki Group’s 2nd mid-term plan. The 3rd mid-term plan starts from the next financial year in April. In terms of markets, with the Japanese economy struggling we will develop further in the Asian market by revitalizing the representative offices in Hanoi & Ho Chi-Minh City (Vietnam), Jakarta (Indonesia) and Kolkata (India) and we will expand overseas from our bases in the Japanese, Chinese and Australian markets.
In China, we will develop new business by deepening relationships with our joint venture partners. In particular, with progression in the Shanxi Jincheng Coal Complex Project, where we have made a capital contribution, we will expand coal sales through Xiangxi Dongjin Coal Ltd., our coal sales company established last April.

Also this year, we will develop global human resources who will become leaders in Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd. in the future. We expect these people to grow as true business people who can structure overall ‘enterprise businesses’. We expect younger employees to tackle new business development actively under our on-the-job training program with management, and to successfully apply the ‘DNA of value creation’, the management philosophy of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd, on organizational basis.

The global economic outlook for the coming year is not optimistic. Tough times will continue, but let us set high targets and proceed positively. We expect everyone to keep running with the spirit to overcome any difficulties and to continually go forward. The results will be achieved through a spirit of not being afraid of challenges and a belief to overcome obstacles by oneself.

Finally, I would like to wish good health & all the best to all and your family members for the year ahead.

*This message was addressed to all officers and employees by President & CEO Masayoshi Tanaka on January 4, 2012.
