2009 New Year Speech of Mr. Tanaka, President of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd.

Dear colleagues, Happy New Year to all of you!
I hope that all of you have started the New Year with renewed spirit.

2008 was a year of rapid change, starting with sky-rocketing prices for resources and energy during spring and summer and then, after September the SUBPRIME loan crisis in USA brought on the global recession very quickly.

The Year 2009 is forecast to be an extremely tough and challenging year for businesses. Although this is a so called 'once in a century crisis', we will embrace this difficulty as a great opportunity to get ahead of our competitors. We will need to be flexible to handle the many changes in the year ahead and adopt such changes with far-sighted management strategy. With such a vision we will have a greater chance of success.

Over the next three years, we will certainly be exposed to an increase in risk and in an increasing competitive business environment. We will therefore need to use our maximum ingenuity to become more focused on the issues challenging us. In order to succeed in this more severe business environment, I would like to ask you all to reassure yourself and to practice our company values reflecting the "The spirit of Tokyo Boeki's foundation" as follows.

  1. Mindset to overcome any obstacle.・・・We welcome problems - never give up to challenge the difficulties.
  2. Mindset of a pioneer.・・・We love deserted business - never hesitate to jump in where people do not like to.
  3. Mindset of management among all employees.・・・We all are presidents of the company - management by all for one.1: Set your mind to overcome any obstacles

I strongly believe that if each of us uses the time efficiently throughout the year and works closely towards these goals, we will be able to make our company, Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd., evolve and become more prosperous, which will bring all of us more happiness.

Finally, I wish all of you the best of health, happiness and prosperity throughout the New Year. Thank you for your attention.

2008 New Year Speech of Mr. Tanaka, President of TBSM

Ladies and Gentlemen, all the colleague at TBSM,
All of you have now started a refreshing new year with the renewed spirit. I would like to say that Tokyo Boeki Ltd. 60th anniversary celebrations last October went well. At the same time Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd. passed their 1st anniversary.
This was done thanks to all your great support and those outcomes extended to the company and I, therefore, express my heartfelt appreciation to all of you.

Viewing the new year 2008, I now foresee that the global economy is starting to turn around after the prosperous times of the last couple of years.
In Japan at the beginning of the year, it started in very tough business circumstances by the influence of the sub-prime loan issues in the USA, the global issue of the price hike of raw materials for steel making, the slowdown in housing/ building industries in Japan due to the change of the basic building construction laws.
Under these circumstances, on the first trading day of the year 2008, the NIKKEI average share price fell to the level of \15,000. In the meantime, looking the bilateral relationship between Japan and China, the year 2008 will pass 30th anniversary since signing Japan and China Peaceful and Friendly Corporation Agreement.
At the end of last year, the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Fukuda visited China and now it has been planned that Mr. Hu Jintao, the President of China will visit Japan this April, which I think will strengthen the relationship and partnership of the two countries.

Today, I wish to confirm that I lead Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd. to act more speedy and more aggressively than last year with the business development focusing on China and other South East Asian countries.
I also confirm that I lead Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials Ltd. to continuously make the best efforts for making great progress in the Shanxi Jincheng Coal Complex Project and Vietnamese Manganese & Ferro Alloy Development Project in CaoBang Province, Vietnam etc.

I would once again like to ask all of you, your continuous support and cooperation for the remainder of 2008.
I wish all of you and your families a healthy and happy year to come.

Thank you for your attention.

Visiting India

Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials will develop the market in India as a 60th anniversary business project. In fact, we have already achieved great results from the business visit of President Tanaka.
Here are the reports of his business visit to India.
At this time, we visited the manufacturer of stainless steel in New Delhi and the manufacturer of ferro-alloy in Burdwan.

<Report from the staff in Material division>
Hot Hotter Hottest!
India, the world's largest democratic country with 1,618 languages, 6,400 castes, 6 religions and a population of over 1 Billion people. There are a mismatch of circumstances in principal cities like New Delhi such as the construction of fiber-optic cables and cattle on the road, side by side.
Since declaring an open door policy for economic development in 1991, the Indian economy has grown rapidly, especially the IT business and automobile industry.
Whereas the automobile industry has contributed significantly to the development of the large labor of India, on the contrary, the IT business has not contributed the same demands on India's human resources.
This is why there are significant expectations of growth within the steel industry.
Recently the large local steel producers reported expansion plans to meet the anticipated demand. There is the expectation that the steel industry will sustain the demand for employment by the youth of India and utilize the abundant raw materials that exist, efficiently.
At Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials, we intend to join in this development of the Indian steel industry with our current business projects in India.

<Report from President Tanaka>
I had the pleasant experience of visiting India during the 1980's. That was due to the founding president Matsumiya's conviction and foresight of the advancement of Indian economy.
After 27 years, this business visit to India was planned by me as president.
We met senior executives of two large steel corporations in India.
Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials will aim to develop the markets in India.
Here are three main points to notice from this visit to India.

  1. It will take at least 10 years for India to improve its infrastructure to become competitive with China. Until then the Market will remain dominated by China.
  2. The growth of population will discourage India in moving towards Industrial mechanization, as a result of the cheap labor. In addition there would be an increasing gap in the share of wealth within the population causing tension.
  3. To succeed in India, it is vitally important to develop sound partnerships with reliable business groups.

New Year's greeting from President Tanaka

Here is the New Year's Day greeting for 2007.
Considering the fact that this year is the 60th anniversary of Tokyo Boeki, the task of the newly formed Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials group is immense.
The founding president Matsumiya, started Tokyo Boeki from scratch with many of the business projects developed by the original members now inherited and managed by Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials.

At Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials, we appreciate the legacy of these business projects inherited from our senior members.
We have been given the mission of "transforming from a trading company to a global business corporation".
In realizing this mission, we are moving forward with nine joint venture companies in China.
In addition, we will continue to develop markets in Australia, India, and Vietnam.
I made the first visit to India as President of Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials, last year.
On this visit, we initiated our first footsteps in India to establish two joint venture companies.
We will develop our business with the keywords "speedy" and "active" in 2007.
We here at Tokyo Boeki Steel & Materials, wish you all good health and well-being for the coming year. pagetop
